Spirit of Mammon

Jesus was the master of making a point when speaking about worldly issues that have influenced believers and unbelievers. Jesus said, “No servant can serve two masters, either he will love the one and hate the other or else he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and Mammon (wealth)”(Luke 16:13).  The people of the world are skillful and resourceful in securing their temporary future in this present age. God’s people need to be just as skillful and resourceful in securing their eternal reward in the age that is to come. The spirit of Mammon is the lifestyle and belief that we don’t need God, and we have the means to get to God on our own if we have riches and money. It is a spirit that contrasts itself with the Spirit of God. It is an arrogant and prideful spirit that tries to replace God. Mammon is looking for servants because it wants to rule over people. Mammon wants you to look to it instead of God. However, Mammon can never deliver on its promises because peace, joy, security and happiness can only be given by God. Mammon is a spirit that rests on money. However, money is neutral. You can do good with money or you can do bad with money. Remember, it was the love of money that Paul said to Timothy is the root of all evil.  When we use our money for God by giving to God FIRST, we are setting right priorities on our use of money. Mammon cannot invade a generous heart that is centered on using money to serve God and His work. Do you serve God with your money by giving to Him first for His work, or do you serve Mammon in thinking that what I need is more money so that I can serve and give to God?
