I AM the Bread of Life

Jesus often said that He was “the Light of the world”. The Scriptures use words to describe the natural fallen condition of this world, speaking of it in terms of death and darkness. Jesus used many metaphors to describe, not only who He was, but also what He came to do in this world. He said, “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men and the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it”. With these words, “I am the light of the world”, Jesus revealed His strong sense of mission. He had certain tasks to do during the limited time of His sojourn on the earth. He was the light of the world, and He was to shine that light until the time came for Him to return to His Father.

In the time of Jesus, the window of opportunity was closing for the people to hear the gospel from Jesus Himself. Likewise, it is also closing for many today who refuse to walk in the light. For those of us who believe that life is now shining within us, we have the only peace that will truly satisfy our quest for happiness and joy in life. For those of you who do not believe that the light of Christ is shining in you, because you do not believe Him, you will need to wrestle with this biblical truth that says, “The light will show us the way out of this world when the day of the Lord comes as a thief in the night” (1 Thess. 5:5). In other words, those who are in the grave at the time of the Lord's coming will respond in one of two ways. To those who believed by true faith, the light will show them the way out of this world, and they will enter into their eternal life and receive the rewards given them because of their righteous acts in Christ. To those who do not believe by true faith, and do not have the light of God, they will continue in darkness until they find themselves at the judgment seat of Christ to give an account for their words and work. There is still time to walk in the light of Christ, by confession of mouth and believing of heart that Jesus Christ is Lord. “Lord, open the eyes of my heart that I might see You. For You are high and lifted up, shining in the light of Your glory”.
