Uncoupling My Trailer
The book of Genesis tells us that God has created us in His image and likeness, but He has also given us a will, an emotional mind, and intellect. This has to do with the soul man in us as opposed to the spiritual man. It is this part of us, in the soul nature of every human being, that we see the will, the emotions, and the intellect. Our conscience is driven by our
will, our emotions, and our intellect. Paul said, “My conscience is clear that we have treated you and done all that we know to do with a clear conscience and that we have done these things with integrity and according to God's grace.”
So there is a connection between what is right behavior based on a good ethical value system and what God requires of us to do because we understand God's grace--that is His favor upon us to do what is right. There's a connection between the soul man and the spiritual man but the Word of God will divide the soul from the spirit. The soul man wanders through life, picking out behaviors that are dictated by his will, his emotions, and his intellect--what is right and wrong. The spiritual man is given a set of standards that God has put into Him because of God’s grace to save us, and to love us back to Him, but we must recognize that grace, and we must have a longing to please God. If we miss this point, the soul man will take over and will completely dominate our lives. That is not a good place to be. The soul man is reckless and can run havoc through the world.
Let’s unload the soulish baggage of bad behavior and bad decisions in our lives and practice what Paul encouraged us to do, “To demolish every argument and every vain imagination that has set itself up against the knowledge of Christ, and that we would take every thought captive and punish every act of disobedience and make it obedient for Christ” (2 Cor. 10:5-6).
