Roadblocks to Living
Jesus told us that as believers we should live a life that is abundant and free. Why is it so hard then for us to live the Christian life? There are many roadblocks to living a life as a Christian: Unbelief, insecurity, pride, idolatry, desire for power and control.
The raging current of our culture, and often our churches, makes it hard to swim upstream. It's considered "normal" to keep far more than we give, to take for ourselves more than to give to others, to look out for “number one”, more than to look out for my neighbor. But the greatest deterrent to living a Christian life is the illusion that this earth is our home, and that everything we do centers around our lives here, now, and even our short-lived future.
The Bible says that we are pilgrims, strangers, aliens on the earth. We are ambassadors representing our true country. Our citizenship is in heaven. We are citizens of a better country, a heavenly one, and where we choose to store our treasures depends largely on where we think our home is.
Do you ever think about how to get out of the mentality that you need to get all that you can out of this world, because you know you only go around once in this life? That kind of thinking is a deterrent to the life Jesus told us to model - to seek first the Kingdom of God, for there your true joy and happiness awaits (Matt. 6:33).
