Drinking Living Water

Are you ever thirsty? Some people drink refreshments all day because they hate to be thirsty. Some people look to be satisfied in various pleasures only to find pleasure a fleeting moment in time. When I was in high school I looked forward to a moment in the future where I would be happy. I can remember I couldn’t wait for my 16th birthday so that I could get my driver’s license, and when I got my driver’s license, then I would be happy. After that it was, “I want to own my own car - that will make me happy. Then when I get out of high school, I will be happy. That didn't work. Then when I graduate from college and get married, and once we have a baby, once we build our first house, once I get a good job, once I do this, once I do that, I will be happy”.

I kept changing my goals and my plans thinking that each plateau would bring me final peace and happiness. I realized that's not what we were made for. We were not made to be satisfied in things, but as Augustine said aloud, “Oh Lord, you have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until we find a rest in you.” Oh God, you have made us to be satisfied only by You, and we cannot be satisfied until we drink of the water that is Christ. The woman at the well didn’t realize who was in her midst. We also can miss the opportunity to receive Jesus who said, “Anyone who comes to Me will never be thirsty”.   To the woman at the well Jesus said, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life" (John 4:13-14).
